The constricted ear is a true malformation exhibiting varying degrees of missing skin and/or skin and cartilage. The absent skin or cartilage makes it challenging to manage surgically; however, the EarWell™ Infant Ear Correction System has demonstrated success with malformations ranging from a Tanzer I to a Tanzer IIB. In the majority of these cases, future surgery involving skin and cartilage grafting is avoided.
The initial application typically involves:
- The use of a large device to allow more room in the superior third of the ear for maximum expansion
- Additional adhesives to secure the Retractors, Conchal Former and the lobule, and
- Application of maximum forces to the ear exceeding those of normal molding applications
PROGRESSIVE RIM TISSUE STRETCHING WITH RETRACTOR
The following video demonstrates a technique to progressively stretch the helical rim through the application of medical-grade adhesive (cyanoacrylate) to the Retractor in advance of its attachment to the ear.
RETRACTOR ATTACHMENT WITHOUT EARWELL™ CRADLE
Towards the conclusion of therapy, continued rim stretching can be achieved through the use of Retainer Tape, Retractor and Micropore™ paper tape. The following video demonstrates the conduct of this technique.
