The helical rim circumscribes the outer perimeter of the ear. It derives from the first brachial arch and attaches to the inner framework of the ear which, in turn, derives from the second brachial arch.
Helical rim irregularities or compression may occur anywhere along the circumference where the rim from Arch I attaches to Arch II.
